The Refugee Welfare Association (REWAC) is an indigenous, non-profit organization registered under Cameroon law in the year 2009. It has as a mandate the protection, promotion, and enforcement of the rights of refugees, migrants, asylum seekers, and IDPs as enshrined in International Law to which Cameroon is a Signatory.
According to the UN Refugee Agency, Cameroon hosts over 200,000 refugees and asylum seekers from 26 countries. The challenge in realizing their rights cannot be left in the hands of the Cameroon government alone or to the UN Refugee Agency.
Indigenous initiatives like REWAC are indispensable to complement efforts made by other international development partners and governments to address the challenges posed by these groups of vulnerable persons.
